Some of the characteristics of my favorite instructors I’ve had in the past, are the instructors that enjoy teaching their subject and their ability and desire to change their teaching style to help their students learn. When an instructor isnt just going through the motions and knowing their job is to teach someone something so they can actually use the knowledge. When an instructor can teach with humor and sarcasm that makes the experience even more enjoyable. When an instructor can give you real world examples so you can relate real world practical experiences to the subject they are teaching. The best instructors always have a goal of making you better than when you walked in without having any ego and they can adapt to their students learning ability. Also an instructors ability to say I dont know, lets figure it out or try it out.

Some of the characteristics that I really look for in an instructor is the ability to relate to its audience. Sometimes when individuals come into a setting they are not used to they can sound otherworldly and not be able to relate to the crowd. People who act or think that they are smarter than the next person does not bode well with many people because it can feel as if the speaker is talking “at” you and not talking “with” you and trying to explain how to get better instead of how “they” got where they are in life today. The use of humor and anecdotal stories help relate the speaker to the room and can help ice break certain situations. Also, breaking up the information in 15-20min segments also allows the audience to have a break ever so often and able to absorb the information in chunks.

I completely agree with you. The best instructors are the ones who truly care about teaching, adapt to different learning styles, and make the subject engaging. Humor, sarcasm, and real-world examples make learning memorable and practical. It’s inspiring when an instructor’s goal is genuinely to make their students better, without ego getting in the way. Admitting “I don’t know” and working together to find answers shows humility and commitment, which makes students respect them even more.
